his glass of wine and looked reflectively in its pale golden depths. ‘Yes, I think we

have to play these next few days very patiently.’

Mark nodded. ‘You’re right. Abelard has no intention of parting until he’s

ready—despite the pressures of his family. He’s playing the field like a Victorian

deb in her first season.’

Kell smiled faintly. ‘Except that Abelard has forgotten and survived more seasons

than I care to contemplate. So I feel we should go easy, no matter how impatient

we feel. He and his party are our guests first and business competitors last. Don’t

forget that his colleagues will be anxious to add to the pressures—it could just

disarm him to find a relaxed atmosphere instead of boardroom tactics.’

Abby felt some surprise. Already her mind had become attuned to the cut and

thrust of business deals where time wasting or the slightest sign of weakness could

be fatal to the desired outcome. She looked at Kell. ‘But it could be bought and

sold twice in two weeks. Aren’t you afraid of some other company putting in a

higher bid?’

‘There is that risk. But I happen to know that Abelard has issued a public denial

of all rumours concerning the possible sale of Delicare Enterprises, which gets him

off the hook for a little while.’

‘If he can muzzle Thea!’

The look Kell turned on Mark was not amused. The older man grinned and shook

his head. ‘Just make sure the price isn’t too high, Kell,’ he said meaningly.

‘I’ve contingency plans in hand to meet that danger,’ Kell said grimly, and for a

moment his glance flickered towards Abby. ‘But like most contingencies the

prospect of their success is somewhat uncertain.’

His words kept returning to Abby later that evening when she retired to the large,

beautifully furnished and airy bedroom which had been allotted to her. There had

been something in his tone that jarred her, as though he expected her to fail him

and was already regretting as foolishness his notion to bring her along on the trip.

She slipped free of her filmy undergarments and shouldered into the new,

glamorous negligee of drifting white chiffon, not bothering to fasten it and merely

drawing its edges carelessly across her as she went towards the adjoining

bathroom. There was something strangely disappointing, almost hurtful, in the

thought that Kell might be resigned to her failing him. Even though it was true that

she’d hated the idea of letting a crowd of strangers believe she was having an affair

with her boss—a particularly intimate affair, she told herself firmly—and the man

in question had given her ample evidence of just how tough, grim and intolerant he

could be, she was discovering an odd little desire to break down that tough and

intolerant barrier and reach the real man beyond. What was he like? With friends

and family, when he relaxed and became human?

Abby’s hand opened the bathroom door, her nostrils registered the scent of

masculine toiletries, and her gaze took in the tall figure with spiky wet black hair

in the act of donning a white terry robe. Simultaneously Abby gasped with horror,

felt her cheeks go crimson and backed towards the door, stammering frantic

apologies.

‘I’m
